Have you ever wondered – most of our goals are just like mirage. Mirage in Science means visibility of a sheet of water in desert due to refraction of light, and philosophically an unrealistic hope that can never be achieved.
Once a thirsty dear was running in a hot desert in the hope of some water and whenever he used to see a sheet of water due to mirage he got hopeful and ran faster. Somewhere thousand of miles away a human being worked really hard and worked harder once he saw some additional gain and hope of further growth.
Just like deer man was very confident that he was moving in right direction to achieve his goal. He worked really hard and within few years he bought his dream car. Then he saw people around him having charter planes and he realised he wanted to have one. Some years later he became CEO of a company and bought a charter plane. But now he thinks he needs a bigger charter plane to accommodate more people and his goal kept changing just like the sheet of water. In this way was he ever be able to achieve his goal. Perhaps not? So where is the fault instead of doing such a hard work man is not able to achieve his goal.
Actually the fault is not in doing hard work but in setting our goals. We make goals to get rich, to buy big house & car etc. which keeps changing and shifting as we achieve one. We need to find the larger goal of our life i.e. purpose of our life which lies somewhere deep in our heart & soul. A BIG cause through which we can bring change in our life and all the other lives we touch on day to day basis. For example: the goal of Steve Jobs was not to earn lots of money instead he wanted to bring change in life of every human by making it more convenient through smart phone technology. Although it has made our life highly inconvenient but credit goes to us for screwing that 😊. The goal of Elon Musk is not only to create a big aeronautics company but to create an alternative place for humans to live in case of catastrophic end of Earth.
Normally we mis -understand our short term goals as our life time goals and in end we feel only momentary happiness even after achieving our those goals. And we never come to know what we actually wanted to achieve in life.
A man’s ultimate goal can never be self-focused and without bigger purpose. When we find a reason why he want to achieve that goal and how it is going to bring a change in broader perspective it becomes a true goal.
In the end, I would like to close with a quote from Helen Keller “True Happiness is not attained through self gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose”.
